Popcorn Brain
When the ideas keep popping
My brain is like the inside of a popcorn popper. Ideas are firing constantly, characters appear out of nowhere, and story concepts compete for attention. If you’re a creative person, you probably know some version of this feeling.
When I was 14, my parents sent me on a summer study program in Grenoble, France, which coincided with the debut of the electronic song “Popcorn,” which mimicked the sound of popcorn popping.
I thought of that recently when I heard the term “popcorn brain,” when the ideas are coming at you fast and furious. That sure applies to me—I get ideas for characters, names and new stories to write all the time. My strategy is to write it down, whatever it is, and then put it aside until I need it.
As you can imagine, my To-Do list is pretty long. Maybe next year I’ll share some strategies for paring it down, but right now I want to focus on wishing everyone a happy holiday season and a new year that brings you everything you wish for.
